Pupil Leadership Opportunities
At the heart of our curriculum is a commitment to Personal Growth - one of the four pillars of our curriculum. We firmly believe that education is about much more than academic success. Helping children to develop confidence, character and independence is fundamental in preparing them for the next stage of their education and future life beyond Fleetville Juniors.
To support this, we are proud to offer a wide range of pupil leadership opportunities that encourage children to contribute to school life, discover their strengths and make a positive difference to others. Through these roles, pupils develop valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, responsibility, resilience and leadership, while growing in confidence and becoming positive role models within our school community.
How does it work?
We believe that leadership roles should be meaningful and valued. Children are therefore invited to apply formally for many of these opportunities, similar to a real-life application process. Depending on the role, pupils may complete an application form, write a personal statement, create a presentation or take part in an interview.
This process encourages children to reflect on their strengths, articulate their ideas and demonstrate their commitment, while developing important life skills such as communication, resilience and responsibility.
What opportunities are available?
At Fleetville, we believe in the power of student voice. Our Pupil Parliament gives children in Years 3–6 a hands-on experience of democracy, mirroring the real UK parliamentary system. Led by our elected student Prime Minister, Cabinet, and Speaker of the House, our Members of School Parliament (MSPs) debate real school issues, vote on new initiatives, and build confident public speaking (oracy) skills. To see democracy in action and track our latest bills, a dedicated Pupil Parliament board is in the heart of the school right outside Mrs Varney-Whitehouse's office!
Our House Captains represent the very pinnacle of student leadership and aspiration. Embodying our core school ethos in everything they do, these student leaders showcase exactly what Fleetville pupils can achieve through dedication, integrity, and pride.
As ambassadors for our community, our House Captains are trusted with key responsibilities that shape our school culture. Working in close partnership with the Senior Leadership Team, their dedicated House Leads, and the Pupil Parliament, they lead their houses in friendly competitions, drive school-wide initiatives, and act as inspiring role models for their peers. Whether they are rallying team spirit or collaborating on school improvement, our House Captains are the visible heart of student achievement and a true inspiration to our younger children.
Our Year 6 pupils step into key leadership positions through our On Trust Roles a suite of vital responsibilities that are pivotal to the daily running of our school. From broadcasting as radio DJs and supporting visitors as office assistants, to guiding younger children as lunchtime monitors and caring for our school animals as animal assistants, these are real-world jobs with genuine impact. Our oldest pupils are expected to independently organise their duties and manage their day-to-day running, fostering a deep sense of responsibility, pride, and active citizenship that prepares them beautifully for the future.
Our Year 5 Reading Ambassadors play a vital role in cultivating a vibrant reading culture at Fleetville. After undergoing specialist training on how to support reading fluency and comprehension, these dedicated pupils are paired with a designated group of children from Years 3 and 4. Every week, our Ambassadors read alongside their younger peers, offering expert guidance, encouragement, and praise to boost their confidence. Through this fantastic peer-mentoring initiative, our Year 5s not only help improve reading skills but also share their passion for storytelling, inspiring a lifelong love of books across the school.
Our Year 5 Multiplication Masters are on a mission to make maths both engaging and accessible at Fleetville. Having successfully navigated the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check themselves, these pupils are in the perfect position to offer authentic peer support, empathy, and encouragement. Multiplication is a crucial foundational skill that supports children throughout their school journey and adult lives. Through lively mathematical games and interactive rehearsals, our Masters work closely with Year 4 pupils to secure their times table recall, build fluency, and boost their confidence ahead of their own checks.
